Dodgers trade Blake DeWitt

Official statement from the Dodgers. I'll have more on the next post:

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Ted Lilly, infielder Ryan Theriot and cash considerations from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for infielder Blake DeWitt and minor league right-handed pitchers Kyle Smit and Brett Wallach. General Manager Ned Colletti made the announcement.

“We’ve been looking to improve our rotation and with Ted, we feel like we’ve got a very good group of starting pitchers for the stretch run,” said Colletti. “Ryan is versatile and can help us in the middle of the diamond as a nice complement to our existing infielders.

“Of all the times I’ve had to tell a player he was traded, this was one of the toughest telling Blake DeWitt,” Colletti added. “His professionalism, his passion and who he is made doing this one of the toughest moves I’ve made.”

Lilly, 34, has a 106-92 career record and 4.21 ERA in 12 seasons with the Expos, Yankees, A’s, Blue Jays and Cubs. He has reached double figures in victories in each of the past seven seasons, including 12 or more wins in six of the last seven.

The Torrance native joins the Dodgers 12 years to the day that he was traded as a minor league farmhand. On July 31, 1998, Los Angeles acquired Mark Grudzielanek, Carlos Perez and Hiram Bocachica from the Montreal Expos in exchange for Lilly, Peter Bergeron and Jonathon Tucker.

On June 14 of this season, Lilly took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before Juan Pierre came off the bench to break up the bid. On May 10, 1997, Lilly threw a no-hitter against Lake Elsinore for Single-A San Bernardino in the Dodgers’ farm system.

This season, Lilly is 3-8 with a 3.69 ERA in 18 starts, as he has received the lowest run support in the Major Leagues (2.31).

Theriot, 30, has played 66 games at second base and 29 at shortstop this season, committing just nine errors. In 96 total games, the right-handed hitter is batting .284 with one homer, 21 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 22 attempts. In parts of six big league seasons, Theriot has a .287 lifetime average and .350 on-base percentage.

The Louisiana native finished sixth in the NL with a .308 average and eighth with a .387 on-base percentage in 2008.

He is under the Dodgers’ control through 2012.

DeWitt, 24, was batting .270 with one homer and 30 RBI in 82 games for Los Angeles. In three big league seasons, the Missouri native has a .262 average with 12 homers and 86 RBI. He was originally selected in the first round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

Smit, 22, is 5-3 with a 2.35 ERA and six saves in 37 games for Single-A Inland Empire and Double-A Chattanooga.  He was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.

Wallach, 21, was 6-0 with a 3.72 ERA in 17 games for Single-A Great Lakes. He was originally selected in the third round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. His father, Tim, is a former Dodger and the current manager of the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes and his brother, Matt, also plays in the Dodgers’ farm system.

Nice! Thanks Rio! I've never seen a DeWitt billboard. Kinda cool seeing the little guys getting some exposure.

I think we got everyone, no? Well besides Matt Kemp. Where the heck is he? Fans keep telling me he's somewhere in Hollywood. Get it? Hollywood? No? Sorry! :)

But seriously, where's Matt Kemp!?

DeWitt / Haeger

I had to get my Dodger news through my phone since I was at Dodger Stadium. Good thing for Twitter updates. Found out that Blake DeWitt will be the Opening Day second basemen and Charlie Haeger will be the 5th starter.

I'm just glad that DeWitt will get an oppurtunity to start and show his talent.

Michael Becker of the Press-Enterprise has the details.

Torre and general manager Ned Colletti called Blake DeWitt into the manager's office Thursday afternoon and asked the 24-year-old infielder to take a seat.

He'd performed admirably during spring training, they explained, but not well enough to make the team's opening day roster. He would begin the season in Triple-A Albuquerque.

DeWitt, who was the opening day third baseman in 2008 only to spend the following year shuffling between Triple-A and the majors, tried his best to hide his frustration.

April Fools.

I wish there was a camera inside that room just to see DeWitt's face. That would of been classic. You really have to think if the Dodgers had already made a decision with DeWitt but wanted to wait till April 1 just to do this joke.

In other news...

The Dodgers selected Charlie Haeger as their 5th starter.

"I feel like a little kid," Haeger said. "I just feel happy. It's like a dream come true. I've been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time and it's finally here."

He had a solid start last night. The walks could get him in trouble though. I noticed Russell Martin was jumping up and down trying to get that Knuckleball. I'm not sure if it's Martin that needs experience in catching that pitch or if the Knuckleball was going all over the place.

DeWitt Should Start Opening Day

What's the hold up on announcing who gets the 2nd Base job? I shouldn't be worried that Joe Torre has yet to announce it, right?

According to the L.A. Times, Torre will announce it sometime today or tomorrow.

DeWitt's spring stats are amazing. Batting a .367 batting average, a .592 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .456

Give DeWitt an oppurtunity to shine.

In other news...

  • Check out as the McCourts go to court. Joshua Fisher does a good job covering this subject.
  • Bill Plaschke is at it again. Click here to read his article on Ronald Belisario and click here to read his article on the Dodgers Opening Day starter. Is he always this negative?

DeWitt (The Next Casey Blake?)

E-mail from Brian

Hey man love the site...

Well now that Casey Blake has gone beardless just thought I’d share that Blake DeWitt is trying to fill the void. Here is a picture from the Winter Development program last month at Dodger Stadium with me and DeWitt’s full on Casey-Blake-style beard. Enjoy!

Once again I love the site, good stuff!

Thanks Brian!

"No Respect"

It's a Sunny Day. Southern California typical weather is coming back. No more Seattle days.

Check out these links.

Blake DeWitt's new album "No Respect" is coming out next week. He's getting rave reviews on his latest song "Albuquerque sucks!" {linked here}

On a more serious note, Tony Jackson of ESPN LA breaks down what the signing of Ronnie Belliard means. {linked here}

Eric Stephen of True Blue LA grabs a few packs of Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards. Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemps were inside. {linked here}

I was looking forward to Apple's big news this morning. I wasn't sure what exactly they were going to announce. After reading the details, I asked myself "If you have a laptop and a iPod, do you really need a iPad ?" The MLB app looks great. {linked here}

The Hall of Fame has decided Andre Dawson's plaque in Cooperstown, N.Y., will feature a Montreal Expos hat, but Dawson plans to wear a Chicago Cubs hat during his induction speech in July. Weird. {linked here}

Loney & DeWitt remembers Adenhart

Clayton Kershaw is about to pitch against the San Diego Padres. It was a great win last night. Hopefully the Dodgers can win today and go to Arizona in a positive note.

Ken Gurnick had these notes...

SAN DIEGO -- In a somber Dodgers clubhouse before Thursday's game with the Padres, Blake DeWitt and James Loney watched televised reports of the tragic death of Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and recalled a batting-practice session in 2007.

"It was just before Spring Training and we needed someone to throw batting practice and he said he needed to throw a bullpen, so we worked out at a junior college in Arizona," DeWitt said. "Afterward, we talked about what a live arm he had. We came out of the same Draft.

"All I heard was how good a pitcher he was. He broke three of James' bats, I know that, and James had to borrow one from me to finish. He seemed like a real nice guy. It's so sad."

Loney said he was speaking with his father when he heard the news.

"I was telling my dad that he threw to us," Loney said. "I had a friend in the Angels system and that's how we met. He had a good arm. He was throwing hard, I remember that."

Orlando vs Orlando

Looks like the Dodgers want to sign either Hudson or Cabrera. Whatever the case, Blake DeWitt should not be happy. The more I think about it, the more I want Hudson. Especially if we can't sign Manny Ramirez. Dodgers can move Casey Blake to Left Field and put DeWitt at Third Base. If the Dodgers can sign Ramirez, then have DeWitt play everyday at Albuquerque. Bring him up after the All-Star break for depth.

Dodger Caravan 2-3-09 (part 2)

It was a long day. I arrived around 10am. My entourage was already there. lol :) But to my surprise, not many people were there. I thought it might pick up later on but it never did. I'm guessing less than 400 fans were there. Nothing compared to other times where 1000 plus would show up. I was at Line B. Fernando Valenzuela, Brad Ausmus, Tommy Davis and Hiroki Kuroda were at Line B. Line A had Blake DeWitt, Steve Garvey, Andre Ethier and Rudy Law. I was in line for about 7 hours. The day went pretty fast. Talking with other fans and even to some of you guys. I think about 7 fans recognized me. Some asked "Are you in the internet ?" or "Are you the homeboy ?" lol Well yes, I have a blog, nice to meet you. Sometimes I feel weird when someone out of nowhere just comes up to me and asks me if I'm the dude that blogs. But it's all good. It's nice to know a couple of people read my blog and tell me they like it. So thanks to those that said hello. So it was aproaching 5 pm. I got all my stuff ready for the 4 players of Line B. I had a '81 Record for Valenzuela. I had nothing for Ausmus. A 8 x 10 picture of Davis and myself that was taken a couple of years ago. A 8 x 10 picture of Kuroda and myself. All 4 guys were nice and since I didn't have anything for Ausmus, he gave me a post card. So I got all 4 autographs, oh by the way, it was a funny moment when I gave the picture to Davis. He saw the picture and noticed that the shirt he was wearing on the picture was the same one he was wearing today ! He said "Hey look, that shirt" and he pulled the shirt out of his Dodger jersey and showed it to me and said "that shirt is this one" It's funny because that picture was taken 4 years ago ! lol On to Line A.

After getting the 4 autographs at Line B, we walked over at Line A. We weren't guaranteed to get autographs. The event was going to be over at 6:30 pm. But we did it. We barely made it. DeWitt autographed a 8 x 10 picture. Garvey signed my Dodger seat. That was cool ! Ethier signed a OMLB. I didn't know what item to give him to autograph since I got several items already. For Law, I gave him a 8 x 10 picture. As far as the crowd, I'm not sure why it was small. But better for me since I was able to get on both lines but I'm sure the Dodgers were not happy with the turnout. You can also blame it on the lineup. Most of these players have signed so many times before. Maybe if Manny Ramirez was here, then it's a different story. Either way, it was a good day. Peace !
