Canon vs Nikon

Meet my old camera. Canon PowerShot SD870 IS. Great camera. Believe it or not, all pictures and videos that I shoot was from this tiny camera. It's a great camera. I highly recommend it.

But I needed something better. I got myself a Nikon D31000 last month. It came with a 18-55mm lens. Which is not a improvement from the Canon. And I'm okay with that for the moment. As I need to learn how to use this camera and all the extra options that comes with it. I do plan on buying a bigger lens for this camera when the Baseball season ends. In the meantime, I will use this one.

Last April, I asked Dodgers photographer Jon SooHoo about Canon's and Nikon's. He basically said that he prefers the Canon for personal use since Canon's make great cameras like the PowerShot SD. When he is working, he prefers the Nikon.

It would be great if any of my readers have a Nikon D3100 and can give me some tips! Send me a message. Thanks!

All my photos I have taken at photo day as well as at CSUN have been from a Nikon, I tink I would prefer it over canon only bc I have worked with Nikon so much

I did my little research and I think about 80% of people told me to go with Nikon.

No problems so far Moe! :)

I've used both. I used Canon at PCC, Nikon from friends. Both are comparable. You just need to get used to the difference in settings. Personally, I'm more comfortable with Canon. Any time you need any help, you know where to find me! I'm hoping to be in the market for a camera later this year. Still crossing my fingers for the Canon 60D.

I use to have the D5000 which was pretty similar to the D3100. It was a great learning camera, but after a year I upgraded to the D300s.

I think most Pro's prefer the Nikon because of it's awesome focusing system. I know a lot of Pro's who were shooting Canon and then made the switch to Nikon.

I recommend the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I've heard a lot of good things from that lens. I have the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens and absolutely love it.

One tip.....get off Auto. Read your manual. Your pics will definitely improve when you shoot in any other mode than Auto. The book "Understanding Exposure" really helped me out back then when I was learning to shoot in Manual Mode.

Good Luck!

P.S. Big fan of your blog by the way :) GO BLUE!

@ Falling LEAVes - Linda! Thanks. I've been reading the manual. Trying to figure things out. But yes, I'm sure I'll see you soon. I'll ask you a couple of questions.

@ Carolyn -

Thanks! :)

The first couple of weeks I was on AUTO. But lately, I've been switching to the other modes.

I should be getting the lens by the end of the year. Just trying to learn this first. I don't want to get all confused.

Thanks for the tips! :)
