Andre Ethier & Farmer John @ Union Rescue Mission (Pictures)

As I mentioned earlier today, Andre Ethier stopped at the Union Rescue Mission. {linked here}

Here's Ethier and Farmer John President Greg Longstreet checking out the Hot Dogs.

Ethier and Farmer John made a visit to the Union Rescue Mission. They made the stop to feed the homeless and to officially proclaim the Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog the official Hot Dog of the city of Los Angeles. Councilmember Tom LaBonge was in hand to make it happen.

Through a campaign that kicked off September 2 and ran through Election Day on November 2, supporters logged onto to cast their votes. As part of the campaign, Farmer John pledged to donate one pound of food for each vote received. More than 50,000 votes were cast. Which meant that Farmer John donated more than 50,000 pounds of food to local Los Angeles food banks Union Rescue Mission and Angel Harvest Food Bank.  To help commemorate the donation, 2010 MLB All-Star Andre Ethier, who partnered with Farmer John during the campaign, was on-site today at Union Rescue Mission to help make the donation.

"Having served Southern California for nearly 80 years, we are committed to the community and are  happy to bring an iconic part of our culinary history to the forefront and to provide food to those who need it most this holiday season," said Greg Longstreet, president of Farmer John.  "We are thrilled that Angelenos not only stood behind making the Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog the Official Hot Dog of Los Angeles, but also recognized the importance of giving back to the community."

"This campaign was a natural fit for me to help make the Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog, a personal favorite, an official part of Los Angeles history, and also to really be able to give back to those in need," said Ethier.  "Food banks, including Union Rescue Mission, often serve more than 3,000 people daily, and because of the votes of Angelenos in support of this campaign this food is going right where it is needed most during this holiday season."

The good people of Union Rescue Mission were nice enough to let me participate in the press conference. I brought the camera along...

Union Rescue Mission, a good place. Doing great things for the homeless! Be informed. Check out their site. {linked here}

So how does a bacon wrapped hot dog look like? Check it out for yourself.

The great Andy Bales (black glasses) grilling those hot dogs. Mr. Bales is in charge of this Mission. A great human being.

Ethier, getting ready to talk to the media.

Ethier listening to Mr. Bales

Mr. Bales, Mr. Longstreet, Ethier and Councilmember Tom LaBonge make it official. The Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog is the official Hot Dog of the city of Los Angeles.

Ethier was happy. This is not one of those publicity events where you might think they are just doing it for the cameras. Ethier really cares about the community and wants to help. Plus I'll be honest with you, I didn't see much media at the press conference. I guess negative stories are more important.

Here we have Ethier with Kitty Davis-Walker and Councilmember Tom LaBonge. Kitty works in the public relations department. Big thanks to her for giving me the opportunity to attend this event. Thanks Kitty! And also to Alex Cornejo!

Thanks to all the great folks at the Mission and Farmer John. It was a great feeling to be there and witness this myself. I hope you enjoyed this post. I'll have a couple of videos tomorrow.
