Ushers Behaving Badly

E-mail from Carlos:

Hi Roberto, I know this has nothing to do with the Dodgers, but I am a Dodger fan and I follow your blog daily, in fact I've commented a couple of times. Anyhow I was at the Angels Yankees game on Saturday when said incident happened, all the details are in the forward email. My names is Carlos Saldivar, I would just like to get the story out there, NBC already aired our story last night, I will email a link to the story also.

Carlos then sends me another forward e-mail:

From Jimmy Galgano:

I am pretty disturbed at the fact that today I took off a day at work to enjoy a game with my kids at your ballpark. I am a Yankee fan and from the moment I got to your park was heckled by fans. I'm a gamer, it doesn't bother me, I give back what is given to me. Your security team called me out of my seat to speak with me and then attempted to remove me from the game. I was pushed by one of your security guards and as he used profanity towards me and my family, My family was then given a middle finger by one of your ushers, all this is recorded on film, even your usher saying get this and then putting up his middle finger. As I was pushed out of the stadium and heckled by security and other fans my children were left behind, what kind of day at the park was this? I have two kids and the only thing they remember about there trip to the ballpark was a security guard giving him the middle finger! Is this how your security is trained I have never had an experience like this before and I'm very upset about this something needs to be done!!!!

From Jose Gonzalez:

I approached the security guard along with my friend Carlos Saldivar and my Caucasian wife Julie Gonzalez. I asked the security guard why I friend was being ejected. His response to us
was, "You don't speak English, get the F***out of here. He looked at my wife and said, "You look like you speak English, what are you doing with them?" We went to guest relations to complain, they said it's a weekend and tomorrow is Sunday...so we will get to it when we can!!!

NBC 4 did air their story last night. You can read all about it by clicking here.

This is very sad. According to the NBC story, the Usher is under investigation and has been suspended. I believe we are living in 2010, no? And we're still living under racial tensions? Seriously? We're all human beings.

Thanks Carlos for the e-mail and update us with any new developments.

Is that usher from Kentucky?

Ernest said...

Do you know what is crazy. Imagine next Spring when Dodger fans of all races go to Arizona to see some pre-season Baseball and are forced to show birth certificates by the police.

Roberto said...

@ Ernest, sad huh? I was thinking about that this past weekend. I guess I'll have to carry my passport to prove my citizenship.

Ernest said...

Frankly, I won't be going to Arizona... I refuse to use my hard earned money in a state that will treat me like a criminal for no reason- in my own country.

Are we really becoming a country that forces Hispanic looking citizens to carry papers? How about Asians? Or those with accents?

Roberto said...

I know what you mean Ernest. I didn't think it was going to go through. It's very sad.

when you say it's on film, do you mean video? or do you mean that one pic of the usher flipping the bird is proof that this whole thing happened? because of that one picture is it i could argue that you had something foul to the usher first or hell, maybe you asked him to do it cos you thought it would be finny. not saying that happened, but that one picture isn't proof of anything

i have serious doubts about the usher saying anything like "you dont speak english, get the f*** outta here." sounds like someone projecting their biased views about everyone in OC being white and racist.

and i seriously doubt this person did nothing to warrant being removed from the stadium. I'm an Angels season seat holder and I sit in the view level and i have never seen anyone removed who wasn't belligerent, cursing or otherwise deserving of removal from the stadium. the only time you see issues at our park is when we play the Dodgers (raider nation), the Red Sox and the Yankees...although i would even say that MOST Yankee fans are respectful.

Hello Victor, who said I was there? I posted a e-mail that I got. You're asking me questions as if I was there.

Keep up the great job on AngelsWin. Enjoy the blog :)

Victor, I'm just curious why is it that you don't believe that the usher made those comments to us? You think we would lie to the press, especially about something so serious? I get that some people do have those biases but what happened to us was inexcusable. I was dumbfounded by the fact that in this day and age someone would make such ignorant comments, and who knows how many other people have been treated that way.

victor said...

for Roberto, I was just speaking generally and not accusing you of anything. Glad you like Angelswin!

as for the last fella, i don't believe the notion that you did NOTHING to instigate what happened. did you get heckled by Angels fans? probably. Did you likely give it back and use some fine choice words? likely. you said you had been drinking but weren't intoxicated? How many times have I heard that before?

you want people to believe that you showed up, did nothing and Angels ushers kicked you out because they're racist. i simply have a hard time believing that. I don't know you, but I know the stadium really well and i have NEVER seen anything that even comes close to what you are describing. I'm not saying you are lying, and i am not saying it didn't happen exactly as you described, i am just saying i have a hard time believing that it went down exactly as you say it happened, with you being the innocent bystander/victim.

Should that usher be fired or severely punished for flipping you the bird regardless of the circumstances? absolutely.

Roberto said...

@ Victor - It's bookmarked.

What I want to know is if there's a video of all this? I'm talking about the racism comments. Not the guy giving you the middle finger, there's a picture of it and I feel he should get fired.

Michael K. Smith said...

@ Victor, you are a Angels fan, of course you are going to defend the usher. But that picture says it all. He should get fired now.

what_difference_does_it_make said...

I'm Carlos, we were not thrown out initially, our friend Jimmy was the one who was thrown out, me and Jose went to ask why he was being thrown out that's when the comments were made.

Paper Boy said...

Artie Moreno should be ashamed. That usher should get fired. If I did that to one of my customers because he's getting me on my nerves, I would be out of a job.

victor said...

I wasn't defending the usher's actions as far as giving you the middle finger goes. and if you do the research you will find that the Angels immediately suspended the usher upon further investigation.

But the guy's story is basically, "i didn't do anything wrong and neither did my friend. when we politely asked what the matter was, the usher a) flipped us off, b) spewed racial epithets in our direction and c) capped it all off by throwing us out because we were Yankee fans AND we were non-whites." that about right? AND proof that ALL OF THIS occurred is ONE picture of a retiree-aged usher flipping you off?

i don't need to be an Angels fan to find the story remarkable. Now, if you can produce any footage of this happening I will gladly apologize for not believing this.

Tom said...

Hey Carlos, where's the film of the racist comments being made? Something tells me there's a bit more to the story. I'm an A's fan that has attended at least 5 games/yr at that stadium for more than a decade and have never had a problem with other fans or ushers. Then again, i don't drink and become loud and obnoxious either. For years, yankee fans have infiltrated other ballparks acting like jerks so i guess you can say this is long overdue.

victor said...

What Tom said. Angels Stadium is not prone to over-reactions by ushers. they generally do much of nothing, standing around watching the ball game. there is a family atmosphere that permeates throughout the ballpark. i admit that changes a tad when the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox are in town and it;s not all on the fault of the visiting team's fans. but for the most part there are rarely fights or altercations breaking out like you might see at other ballparks in the Southern Californian area. ;)

Fernando said...

I have to agree with the others. This usher has to get fired. You can't defend him. The picture says it all. Now about the racist comments, we will never know. We were not there.

victor said...

@Fernando. I don't think anyone is defending the usher using the middle finger there. I think the question is to what transpired before and after. This picture only proves that an usher flipped someone the bird.

rai909 said...

This is why me and my family dont go to Angel games... my dad, an Angel fan said he never wants to return to that place cuz of bad customer service.i havent gone to an angel game since 2003..

Fernando said...

Hey Victor, do read English? Don't you understand what I said? I agree with you. This is what I wrote

"Now about the racist comments, we will never know. We were not there"

victor said...

wow Fernando! no need for the aggression or personal attack. I read pretty well actually; I write well too. thanks for asking though. Glad you care

Fernando said...

Victor, what's the problem? Stop being so sensitive. It's obvious you didn't finish reading my comment and directed a message to me saying that the picture does not prove of any racial comments. I don't know why you directed that message to me since I actually agree with you! Next time, finish reading the comment before you want to pick on someone. I'm sure you are a nice guy but you need to calm down. I'm not attacking you or your comments. Like I said, I agree with you! The Usher needs to get fired for displaying poor judgment. With the racist comments, we will not know I guess unless there's a video.

I'm sorry for any misunderstanding Victor.

AdamAsphalt said...

HAHA!! Yankees fans are idiots. Marvin (the guy next to mustache man) should have given you the finger too!

soooo, you were just minding your own business, and the security stopped everything, to pick you, out of at least 10,000 other hispanics, just to mess with you, for no reason??

Notice this was in Right Field Pavilion, with the Budweiser Patio, where people go to drink beer, stand around and pretend to watch the game?

Stop making up stories! You were an idiot, you got thrown out, deal with it! It's your own fault.

Because you don't know how to act like an adult, you lie, and possibly cause a man to loose his job?

I was at all 3 games this weekend, and gotta say, skankees "fans" are getting uglier every year. No baseball knowledge, no respect for the game, complete ignorance is what you'll get from yank-off "fans"

I can't wait till the Dodgers host the yank-offs. Try running your mouths in LA, you won't get thrown out and a middle finger....you'll get your face beat off....

Michael K. Smith said...

You came out as a good guy Fernando. I wouldn't of said sorry. He just wants to pick a fight.

Thomas said...

Hey Michael K. Smith, why don't you shut up and let us hear the rest of the story? Victor isn't trying to pick a fight, but after reading all of these comments, I sure as hell am! Look, Victor isn't trying to defend or condemn anyone - he's trying to figure out the whole story so we all can have a better idea of what actually transpired before everyone jumps on the "you were right" or "you were wrong" wagon. Trying to make an informed decision by only having one side of the story is choosing to be ignorant to what actually happened.

As for Fernando, your poor choice of wording in your first posting made it sound as though you were attacking Victor. Saying "you can't defend him" without clarifying who "him" was referring to made it seem as though you thought Victor was a racist pig trying to defend the usher. And by the way, YOU only compounded the problem with YOUR personal attack on Victor, asking him if "he could read English" and questioning his ability to comprehend what was said when really, he was trying to clarify his point when you came out and attacked him. So good job there. (That was sarcasm by the way)

I'm sick and tired of you people (I'm looking at you, Michael K. Smith) who are so willing to condemn the ONE PERSON who is trying to get the whole story BEFORE choosing to judge! Most of us here aren't children, we're adults who know how to make informed, rational decisions based on facts! So try getting the whole story before throwing someone under the bus, okay?!

Fernando said...

Hi Thomas, sorry to say this but you don't make sense. I agree with Victor 100%

I will say it one more time, the Usher needs to get fired. As far as the racist comments, we will never know. I'm attacking the Usher for his ugly display of showing the middle finger. I'm not attacking him for racist comments since we don't know the whole story.

I did not like it that Victor made a comment towards me thinking I was saying the Usher was a racist. I never did say that.

For the record I was at this game on Saturday and sat in the same section as this guy and his children. For him to act like the victim is absurd. The parents were sitting at the top of the section and the children were in the front row just in front of me. I've never been more shocked at the behavior of children as I was at this game. There were 3 boys approx 6, 8, and 11, and a girl about 14. They were chanting "F*** the Angels" every chance they got. When confronted by neighboring fans to keep quiet they presented them with a finger of their own on a number of occasions. The mother came down a couple times to check on them only to join them in their heckling. I saw the husband get in the face of the security guard repeatedly saying "you can't F***ing touch me." Looks like the nuts didn't fall too far from the tree in this family. The picture of the usher is innapropriate but i'm sure was taken out of context. This man and wife and his family most definitely deserved to be escorted out. Angel stadium is a family place and shouldnt be degraded by these types of "FANS". By the way the Angels won the series against the Yankees 2-1. GO HALOS!!

angelsfan69 said...

I know this usher very well. I have been a regular at the stadium and at this ushers area for many years. I KNOW HE IS NOT A RACIST. It sounds to me like a typical alchohol situation which was always typical during the "dreaded 3" (yanks, dodgers, and red sox) series.

What I have heard, tell me if Im wrong Carlos, a friend of Carlos was intoxicated, cussing and using gestures as to be masturbating. The security was called and escorted Carlos' friend out of the park. During the "throw out" Carlos asked the usher why his friend was being thrown out many times. The usher trying to control the crowd had become frustrated by his numerous inquirees may have asked if he "under stood english". It's like at work if someone asks you over and over about something you have told them over and over.....your frustration overwelms you......Comon Carlos, he already told you! How many times does he have to tell you???!!! You saw how he was acting. He needed to be thrown out!

Now let's talk about the picture. Looks to me you asked him to pose for the picture. Maybe after all was said and done you asked him to pose? You know, all is calm, on your way out, "hey, will pose just for the fun of it? This will be funny when I show my buddy" Usually there are alot of people in the area behind the usher during the game smoking. Looks like your on your way out....noone smoking. If anyone knows Lee and the area could confirm.

Now, another interesting fact that you may want to let the others to know....How did this become what it has? Where do you work???? NBC got the story real quick, didn't they? Are you Affiliated?

Carlos, you know as well as others that you are fabricating a story to behoove you somehow. I am not saying your friend did not get kicked out. I think you are trying to ruin someone else's life for a kick, just to say "I did that I got him fired". You are prooving to yourself that you can do what you are doing.

Carlos, come clean. Quit lying about what really happen.

UNBELIEVABLE!
I am in disbelief of the racial accusations these men are claiming of the Usher Mr. Leon. I was at the game on Saturday with my boyfriend. We were in section 248. We were sitting near an African American family; husband, wife and 2 kids around the age of 5 and 6 years old. The wife/mother of the family approached that same usher in tears to complain of 8 rude and obnoxious young men that were yelling racial slurs toward her and her family. Mr. Leon removed all 8 of them by himself single handed. I was very impressed with how he handled this situation. I believe this is vivid proof that Mr. Leon is not racist. He is a hard working man with a big heart that is getting a bad rap. All of the fans around the area complimented the usher on how he handled this situation.

I love JUSTIN said...

I also was at that game and it did go down exactly as the person posted a couple comments above me. The first man who got kicked out of that game was first warned for foul language and then was kicked out for pretending to masturbate i mean really?? As one of the men said in his interview his kids shouldnt have been subjected to the finger well what about all the kids who were subjected to this man masturbating or the foul language i have a 2 year old and let me tell you id rather my daughter see the finger then hear foul language and repeat it or have to see the thing that man did. Do you guys work in general public where you have to deal with drunks and rowdy idiots at some of the most popular games where no one knows how to respect the person next to them like at a red socks games, yankee games or Dodger games So the guy might have lost control big deal! everyone makes mistakes. But if you are sooo certain that hes a racist then wheres the proof and wheres the other pictures that you say you have? I know almost all the ushers in right field i have never encountered any problems with any of them. The only people they really kick out are people who are rude and do stupid things. Leon the man that everyone is saying is a racist is not a racist at all. He is a kind hearted man who would do anything for anyone. you all would know this if any of you have talked to him. Yes he got suspended and that is punishment but why should he get fired over this for real everyone needs to learn the facts on this before you all LABEL him. So if he is such a racist are you all hypocrites for calling him a racist and not even knowing if that is really how it went down. Because im sure that none of you would be happy if you were LABELED as something or even a racist and werent. you guys are Judging someone before you know the facts. This isnt right this poor man who does a damn good job at what he does shouldnt be fired for his first offense. I think you men or so called men are trying to ruin his life just because he kicked you out of the ball game. lots of people get kicked out of the ball games so what they deal with it get over it and go to another ball game the next home stand. but seriously if you have proof (more pictures) like you say you do then post them show the real truth of everything that happended.
