Players From My Childhood: Sharperson

There are so many Players that I have fond memories from my Childhood. I would like to share my memories with you. Most of them weren't popular players. Not the big name. Just regular players playing a child's game.

First up: Mike Sharperson

First thing that pops up in my mind when I think about Sharperson was when he got selected to the 1992 All-Star Game.

The '92 Dodger Team was bad and didn't have much luck. {linked here} Injuries to Darryl Strawberry and Eric Davis was the main story. The only bright spots that year was Sharperson, Brett Butler and Rookie of the Year Eric Karros.

I have no idea how Sharperson made it to the '92 All-Star Game. But remember, one player from each team has to represent. The reason I will always remember Sharperson and his All-Star selection is because I watched this game on T.V. I believe it was during the Pre-Game Show when they showed Sharperson getting autographs from the whole N.L. Squad on a bat. I thought that was really cool. Sharperson came up to every player and asked for a autograph. I always wondered, did he get the autographs on his own bat ? And was he able to get the A.L. team too ? You have to think Sharperson knew this was going to be his only All-Star Game.

Not a big name with great stats but he was fun to watch.

Sharpie died from a car accident in 1996 {linked here} Sad story.

Well said! Often in baseball, my favorite payers have been bit players, or unsung players, or players that had a few brilliant moments among many just regular moments. Players with whom I identified for reasons that may have nothing to do with superstar status (or lack thereof), but ones that did or said something or made a play that I identified with personally.

Thanks Dusty. I'll keep writing posts on players that may have been forgotten by the fans. Mostly players from the 90's :)
