Ron Cey "El Pinguino"

This is a photo of Ron Cey. "El Pinguino" played Winter Ball in Puerto Rico on 1973 with the Cangrejeros de Santurce. The Cangrejeros represented Puerto Rico in the "Serie del Caribe" The Dominican Republic won the Serie del Caribe. They were managed by Tommy Lasorda and Bobby Valentine was the MVP of the series. Other interesting notes with ties to the Dodgers are that Steve Yeager had 7 RBI's in the series with the Dominican Republic. Steve Garvey (played third base, not first base) and Manny Mota played for the D.R. also. Joe Ferguson played for Team Venezuela. Frank Robinson managed Team Puerto Rico.

Kind of makes me wish that I lived during those times. This series was also a bit sad because it was about a month after Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash.

I lived through those years in Arecibo PR. Ron Cey "the Penguin" played for my favorite team "Cangregeros del Santurce". It was privilege to see him play and the tickets were $0.75, that's if you were not skilled enough to jump over the fence behind the third base.

In the 1953-54 season, Tom Lasorda was a pitcher with the Santurce Cangrejeros and a teammate of an outfielder that Lasorda's major league team tried to hide in Montreal the previous season. That teammate was Roberto Clemente. The following season he would have played on the greatest team ever in the winter leagues, the Cangrejeros which won it all with Clemente in left and Willie Mays in center.
